For the first time - Buildings Day - a dedicated event to present how the building and construction sector is able to tackle climate change - is to be held as part of the official programme at this year`s UNFCCC Conference of the Parties (COP21) in Paris.

The building and the construction sector is also responsible for 30% of global CO2 emissions. This figure is growing rapidly and could reach 50% of CO2 emissions by 2050. This also increases risks and vulnerability of countries, regions and local communities to climate change impact. Rapid urbanisation, especially in emerging economies is only going to accelerate this impact.

The first Buildings Day, to be held at COP21 on 3 December 2015, will focus on public strategies and policies, finance and value chain solutions to reduce carbon emissions of the sector.

The Buildings Day will also provide an opportunity to launch an alliance of organizations that collectively will commit to:
- Helping to put the buildings and construction sector on the “below 2 °C path”;
- Aligning existing initiatives, commitments and programmes to achieve greater scale and increase the pace of efficiency actions;
- Catalysing stronger collaboration and targeting sectoral and cross sectoral climate action and solutions for all.

«The building and construction sector is an economic powerhouse. It represents more than 50% of global wealth. The sector also offers one of the most cost-effective and economically beneficial paths for reducing energy demand and associated GHG emissions while at the same time supporting adaptation and resilience. Many solutions are available, and the economic, health, and social benefits of sustainable buildings are significant, and have been demonstrated. We can to act now to scale-up actions that put the buildings and construction sector on the “below 2 °C path”» says Peter Graham, Executive Director of GBPN.
