Since their creation in 1985, the "World Habitat Awards" reward housing and habitat projects proposing "practical, innovative and sustainable solutions to the current housing issues in various countries". Applications are open for the 2015/2016 edition.

Candidates must submit projects and approaches in housing and habitat fields, that:
- propose practical, innovative and sustainable solutions to the current housing issues in various countries.
- can be transfered and adapted to provide appropriate solutions.
- are already in place, meaning that they are not only at the design, planning or initial development stage.
- integrate habitat in a large perception and present other benefits such as water and energy savings, income generation, social integration, education, health, as well as increasing individual and community`s ability to act.

A comity will review and evaluate the candidacies and will preselect between 10 and 12 projects. Preselected projects will be analyzed by a comity of independant experts.
Some preselected projetcs will be visited for evaluation purposes before recommendations are submitted to the international jury which notably includes the Executive Directof of UN-Habitat.
Applications must be submitted before April 30th, 2015.
From now on, the World Habitat Awards will be presented in April each year, during the World Urban Forum or the UN-Habitat Board.
